| Alex's father is listed on his marriage certificate (1876) as William Porteous. However, the 1851 census shows his mother as a widow and of having had a previous illegitimate child. He was registered in the 1851 census (age 1)and the 1861 census (age 10) as Alexander Mack. His real father is assumed to have been Alexander Mack, who was a neighbour. The 1851 census records him as being 39, an agricultural labourer with a wife and 5 children. |
| Note : | Alex's dob was initially assumed to have been June 1849 (from Canadian census of 1911). The 1851 Census records Catherine Porteous (nee Pearson) as a widow; there is a record of the death of a William Porteous in Tranent in 1845, which would match the 'widow' status although it lists his age as 36 which does not match his supposed birth date. So William could not have been Alex's father. This is supported by the fact that Catherine had the first of her 3 children by David Neil in 1847. The 1851 census lists Catherine having a son Alex MACK age 1 born in Tranent, he is also in the 1861 census as age 10. These suggested that Alex Mack was the illegitimate son of Catherine and Alexander Mack, who is listed on the previous page of the 1851 census as a 39 year old agricultural labourer, living in Tranent with his wife and 5 children. It appears that sometime between the 1861 and 1871 census returns Alex took his mothers married name to become Alex Porteous, and indeed his marriage certificate (1876) records his father as William Porteous. Catherine had 3 other illegitimate children registered as the children of David Neill who she eventually married. |

| Using her maiden name Catherine Pearson won a maintenance order against Alexander Mack for the support of her child, initially named Alex Mack in census records. He subsequently change his name to Alexander Porteous (surname of his mothers first husband) and referred to him as his father in his wedding details |
