Note :

Following his mothers death (he was 3 months old) John was looked after by neighbours (Joseph & Elizabeth Wale); indeed until he was about 14 he thought the Wale's were his parents and his name was John Wale.

Shortly after that his father left and was believed to have emigrated to find work. He was believed to have ended up in New Zealand based on the stamp or sender address on a letter received years later, but never opened.
In practice he remarried in 1874, and had two more children before emigrating to Tasmania with his wife and their children in 1879.
